Higher Education, Teaching and Learners

This post focuses on the professional development courses I completed on the topic of Higher Education teaching; educational leadership; teaching both online and in person in a class and how to be an Educator. I have also included the related topics of studying at PhD level and Museum learning.

Course title: Introduction to Enhancing Learning and Teaching in Higher Education

Course run by: UNSW Sydney

Course completed 2019, eligible for certificate

Here's a very specific course I completed in 2016 and am eligible for a certificate in, which trains you to teach at university level. This course is for anyone who wishes to teach in Higher Education. It was created around the system at the University of Groningen where postgraduate students (MRes students onwards) are able to teach undergraduates at the University of Groningen. I studied this course alongside the University of Groningen's Dutch language course (eligible for certificate) in case I had the opportunity to study and teach at their university on both their English and Dutch university courses and deliver the courses speaking in both English and Dutch.

Course title: Becoming a Student Assistant: Teaching and Mentoring

'Learn how to be professionally involved in teaching, support and governing of higher education institutions'

Course run by: University of Groningen

As you can see, I completed 100% of both courses run by the University of Groningen in 2016 and am eligible for certificate for both courses (Student Assistant and Dutch).

Months later (2018), I went on to complete and be eligible for a certificate in PhD level study:

Course title: Discovering Your PhD Potential

Course description: 'Learn how to research and write a high-quality research proposal for postgraduate applications'

Course run by: University of Leicester

The following course I undertook in 2019 trained me to have leadership qualities in educational institutions, including in schools and taught how to draw on critical thinking to benefit your educational leadership style.

Course title: Educational Leadership: Working for Good

Course run by: The University of Manchester

Further to the aspect of this course that discussed leadership in the classroom, I also studied managing classroom behaviour to build trust and ensure a good learning environment for all (2019); and how to upskill my lesson planning (2019):

Course title: Managing Behaviour for Learning

'Transform your classroom with this CPD-certified course for teachers. Support learning by building trust and improving behaviour'

Course run by: National STEM Learning Centre

Course title: Teaching English: How to Plan a Great Lesson

Course run by: British Council

The same year 2019 (so prior to the pandemic hence in advance of the recent surge in need for online teaching skills and ability to create and deliver online course materials) I also completed a professional development course that addressed a different learning environment: online platforms. This course below focuses on the online educational community and trained me (2019) to teach courses online as an online Educator:

Course title: The Online Educator

Course description: 'Design engaging courses, make your teaching more inclusive, navigate online research ethics and shape your digital identity'

Course run by: The Open University

I also explored another aspect of online teaching in 2019. Although it is aimed at people teaching English language, I was interested in the topic of how to transfer in-person teaching skills into teaching effectively on online platforms:

Course title: Teaching English Online

Course run by: Cambridge University Press and Assesment

Another different learning environment I studied (2018), and completed a course on, taught me how to enrich and support museums as a place of learning.

Course title: The Museum as a Site and Source for Learning

Course description: 'Explore the purpose of museums today and find how they facilitate learning'

Course run by: The University of Glasgow

Eligible for certificate
